Greenbelt The Greenbelt lands form a semi-circular belt of approximately 17,600 hectares on the edge of Ottawa-Carleton's urban area. These lands were set aside in 1958 to prevent urban sprawl and to provide future parks and public open spaces. Presently, some of the land is leased, some is in public use, some is used for research and development activities, and large tracts have been set aside for the conservation of the water table and the preservation of animal and plant life. The Greenbelt is owned and managed by the National Capital Commission, a Crown Agency of the Canadian government.
