1997 Survey of Household Spending Enquête sur les dépenses des ménages, 1997 Users are advised that negative values appear in certain fields and are to be expected. For example, in the variable "Selling price of home sold in 1997" values are negative because the flow of the amount received from the sale of the dwelling (incoming) is opposite to the flow of money spent (outgoing) - expenditure variables are generally positive. For other variables, some records may have negative values. For example, "income from earnings" is net of expenses from self-employment. Likewise, "Purchase of recreation vehicles" is net of the amount received for the sale of a vehicle. Please refer to Appendix B in the documentation for an indication of which variables may have negative values. NOTE: You will find a value label called: "Masked records".
