Description of the datasets:

The Researcher Datasets from the PRS Group provide annual and monthly weighted average risks across countries from 1984 on a wealth of Political, Economicand Financial risk topics for 140 monitored countries (see list of countries).

From the producer's web site: The ICRG methodology is used consistently by researchers at the IMF, and has been acclaimed in such publications as Barron’s, The Economist, and The Wall Street Journal. (Accessed, March 11, 2016) See online brochure.

* Ratings explained: Ratings of 0 equate to very low risk and the upper-most ratings, e.g., 4, 6, 12, ... equate to very high risk. The exception to this is "Composite Risk" where "... the highest overall rating (theoretically 100) indicates the lowest risk, and the lowest rating (theoretically zero) indicates the highest risk" (UGM, page 15).

* Unique coverage: There are 27 political risk measurements including five aggregates for which there are 15 associated subcomponent variables in total and seven other aggregates for which PRS does not provide separate subcomponent variables. The components of the ICRG Financial Risk Rating are Foreign Debt as a % of GDP, Exchange Rate Stability, Debt Service as a % of Exports of Goods & Services (XGS), Current Account as a % of Exports of Goods and Services, and International Liquidity.>

The components of the ICRG  Economic Risk Rating are GDP per Head, Real GDP Growth, Annual Inflation Rate, Budget Balance as a Percentage of GDP and Current Account as a % of GDP.

The Composite risk index is based on a possible 100 points and aggregates political, financial and economic risk using the PRS Composite Risk Rating formula. | Excel table

Table 3Ba - Political Risk by Subcomponents, May-2001 -
This monthly Political Risk index is based on a 50 possible points across 15 detailed subcomponents . These are subcomponents for the five political components: Government Stability, Socioeconomic Conditions, Investment Profile, Internal Conflict and External Conflict. | Excel table

The Excel file above starts in May 2001 and provides 18 detailed subcomponents, with 3 subcompents on each worksheet .
See for example, User guide, page 3, "Government Stability" includes breakdowns for its subcomponents: "Government Unity", "Legislative Strength" and "Popular Support" as well as the aggregated "Government Stability", and on the following page, "Internal conflict" includes each of its subcomponents: "Civil War/Coup Threat", "Terrorism/Political Violence" and "Civil Disorder" as well as the aggregated "Internal conflict", and so on.
